2026/06 - Expanding Your Game’s Reach through Culturalization (Kate Edwards)

This masterclass reframes culturalization as a strategic creative discipline for Art Directors and Lead Artists working on globally distributed games. Moving beyond localization, it explores how visual design, iconography, architecture, costumes, characters, environments and symbols can carry unintended cultural, historical or political meaning across regions. Participants will learn how to anticipate cultural sensitivities at the concept and art direction stage, protect the integrity of their creative vision, and design worlds that resonate internationally without diluting artistic ambition. The session provides practical tools to help Art Directors lead culturally informed visual decision-making while minimizing avoidable controversy and maximizing global impact. In short, you will learn how to design games that travel well — visually, culturally and commercially. From June 22nd to June 25th - 9:00-11:00am every day (CET Time) - Remote training I - Culturalization as a Design and Production Discipline II - World-Building, Meaning, and Allegorical Distance III - High-Risk Content Areas in Global Games IV - Awareness, Policy, and Tooling in Production Pipelines V - Culturalization Process and Decision-Making Frameworks
